Help us build a parallel barter economy for creatives, professionals, and knowledge workers.
You know that feeling in between client projects. Skills soften. Morale drops. The fear sets in.
Imagine you could get help building your side projects and help others with theirs, sharpening your craft, growing your network, and exchanging real value without pitching or competing.
Our hypothesis: trust-based IOUs issued one-to-one can unlock value in a peer-to-peer economy that runs parallel to paid work.
Based on skills, needs, and trust patterns.
Your way: video call, in-person, async; whatever works for both parties.
We help you track time you give and receive. No money changes hands.
Genuine community develops and trust compounds over time.
*We're curating for balance and diversity. Don't see your skills listed? Great! Apply to enhance the community with your talents.
This is an experiment in mutual aid and community.
Let's discover the answers to these questions together:
Minimum: 3 hours/month (one 90-min session + matching time)
Recommended: 4β5 hours/month (one session per week)
Here's what we do track, and what we never will.
All data is anonymised for research. Your real name never appears in published findings without explicit consent.
No, techincally its a database of IOUs. Time banking is a way to trade your time for credits. Imagine you spend one hour helping someone with a project. Instead of them paying you in dollars, you "earn" one hour of credit from someone else in the community later on. While our system and time banking both value one hour of work equally no matter what kind of work you do, our system is different because it's built on reciprocity, not anonymous community credits.
You can ask the person who issued you an IOU if they will let you use it to trade with someone else. We don't anticipate this happening that often, but it's a good failsafe to ensure help circulates in the community.
The list on our site shows common categories like Tech, Creative, and Business, but it isn't everything. If you have a professional skill that can be shared in person, over a video call or done asynchronously, like project management, research, or even consulting, you can still apply. We are looking for all kinds of skills.
Not necessarily, however we will be focusing on applications compatible with the London time zone as the history of these sorts of mutual aid networks has shown local works better. That said, our intention is to test some theses about remote knowledge work and how it plays into this sort of system, so we will be admitting folks who are in time zones that are relatively easy for Londoners to interface with: (CST, EST, AST, BRT, FNT, AZOT, GMT/UTC, CET, EET)
Yes, we would love to have you! However, there is one big rule: you cannot offer medical or mental health services that involve "life or death" or serious health circumstances. You can use your skills to teach, consult on general topics, or help with health-related projects, but you won't be acting as a person's primary healthcare provider here.
Most traditional time banks are for local chores or care work, like babysitting or moving furniture. Zeitgeist Exchange is built specifically for "white collar" professionals and creatives. We focus on skills like coding, marketing, and strategy. We also use a modern system that tracks trust and relationships, making it feel more like a professional network and less like a neighborhood chore list.
This is for people who are "naturally generous." It is for freelancers, remote workers, and professionals who have extra time and want to meet other smart people. If you like helping others and want to build a "safety net" of professional friends without spending money, this is for you.
The project was started by Brave New Agency Ltd. We started it because we believe that the current job market is changing. We think people need a way to keep their skills sharp and help each other out during the "gaps" between paid projects. We want to see if we can build a community where trust is more valuable than cash.
To keep the community healthy, we need people to stay involved. If you haven't participated in any exchanges for 45 days, you will receive a friendly warning email. If you remain inactive for 90 days, you will be removed from the exchange to make room for someone on the waitlist.
Since no money is changing hands and these are personal favors between community members, it is usually seen as a hobby or a social club. However, because we are professionals, we always suggest you check with your own tax advisor if you are worried about how "bartering" works in your specific area.
We ask for a minimum of 3 hours per month. This usually looks like one 90-minute session helping someone else and a little bit of time spent finding matches. Most of our members spend about 4 to 5 hours a month because they find the networking so valuable.
Our system is built on "IOUs" and trust. After every session, members can leave feedback. If someone isn't helpful or doesn't follow the rules of reciprocity, they won't get matched with new people. The community is invite-only to make sure everyone stays high-quality.
While this isn't a job board, it is an amazing networking tool. You will be working 1-on-1 with other professionals who might work at companies you like. We imagine people will build trust here that may well lead to real-world job offers or partnerships later on. But this is not a guaranteed outcome or our primary purpose.
Yes. In our exchange, everyone's time is valued exactly the same. Whether you are a junior designer or a senior executive, one hour of your life is worth one hour of someone else's. This is the core "founding principle" that makes the community fair for everyone. That said, all exchanges are mutually agreed to, so nobody is forced to offer time they don't want to offer.
